Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo

The Academy of the Arabic language (Arabic مجمع اللغة العربية ) in Cairo is an official institution in Egypt, which takes care of the Arabic language.

Formation

The first attempt to establish an academy for the Arabic language, goes back to the year 1892. The most important members were then Sheikh Mohammed Abduh, Sheikh Muhammad Tawfiq el- Sheikh Muhammad Bakri and Mahmoud al - Schinqiti. After a few months, but the Academy was dissolved. The second attempt took place in 1916. This time it managed the Academy until the time of the Egyptian Revolution of 1919, when it was dissolved. In December 1932, the Academy was re-established in Royal Decree out.

Founding members

According to the Royal Decree of October 1933 was the Academy of 20 members, ten Egyptian and ten foreign.

The objects of the Academy are mainly:

  • The publication of Arabic lexicons
  • The study of language problems
  • The lexicalization of new or foreign words and concepts
  • The revival of the Arab cultural heritage
  • The organizing of cultural activities
