Acanthocalycium

Acanthocalycium spiniflorum

Acanthocalycium is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). Its botanical name (Greek: thorny calyx ) refers to the spiny scales on the flower, which is typical for the genus.

Description

Acanthocalycien are spherical to columnar stem succulents of up to 60 cm high and 20 cm diameter. The plants usually remain unbranched or branching low from the bases. Which are on the up to 20 ribs areoles bear many, up to about 8 cm long thorns, which are not clearly divided into rim and central spines.

The crest formed by near- areoles, funnel- shaped flowers bear outside shed, which converge in sharp thorns. This feature is typical for the genus Acanthocalycium and only occurs in this. Inside is the area containing the ovary of the flower ( ovary ) protected with a ring of hairs. The color of the bloom is either yellow to orange or white to pink or magenta.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Acanthocalycium are all home to Argentina.

The first description by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936. The type species is Echinocactus spiniflorus K.Schum. Belong to the genus of the following types:

  • Acanthocalycium ferrarii noise
  • Acanthocalycium glaucum F.Ritter
  • Acanthocalycium klimpelianum ( Weidlich & Werderm. ) Backeb.
  • Acanthocalycium spiniflorum ( K.Schum. ) Backeb.
  • Acanthocalycium thionanthum ( Speg. ) Backeb.

A synonym for the genus is Spinicalycium Fric (1935, nom. Inval. ICBN article 36.1).
