Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti di Bergamo

The Accademia Carrara [ karrara ] is an art gallery and an art school in Bergamo, Italy.

The origin of the art gallery can be attributed to the Count Giacomo Carrara, a patron and collector, who at the end of the 18th century left the city of Bergamo, a generous inheritance. After the death of Count in 1796, his legacy was managed until 1958 by an agent, then the city of Bergamo took over direct supervision. 1810 a new building was built to a design by architect Simone Elia, a pupil of Leopoldo Pollack in neoclassical forms,

The museum was able to increase his collection through purchases and donations. 2006, has 1,800 pictures from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including paintings by artists such as Pisanello, Botticelli, Bellini, Lotto, Mantegna, Raphael, Moroni, Palma Giovane, Baschenis, Fra Galgario, Tiepolo, Canaletto and Piccio.

Next to the pictures to drawings and prints, bronzes, sculptures and porcelain, furniture and a collection of decorations are in the possession of the museum.

1793, the date of first opening his private collection to the public, the Count Giacomo Carrara desired that even characters and painting classes should take place at this point. The school, which was housed as the art gallery in the same building until 1912, is now housed in a separate building nearby. Since 1988 she has been expanded into a nationally recognized Accademia di Belle Arti ( Academy of Fine Arts).

In 1991, the Galleria d' Arte Moderna e Contemporanea ( GAMEC ), a gallery of modern and contemporary art, the museum has been added. It is housed in a neoclassical building opposite the headquarters, a former, now restored convent. Currently, the building has ten exhibition rooms on three floors. With the acquisition of the Raccolta Gianfranco e Luigia Spajani in June 1999, the permanent collection includes contemporary works by Italian and foreign artists of the 20th century, such as: Boccioni, Balla, Morandi, Campigli, Casorati, Savinio, De Chirico, Kandinsky, Sutherland and Manzù.
