Access to the Region's Core

The 5.6 km long ARC Tunnel ( Access to the Region 's Core, dt access to the heart of the region, including Trans -Hudson Passenger Rail Tunnel ) is the centerpiece of a new railway line for passenger, which the capacity between New Jersey and Manhattan expected to double. The access trail begins west of the Secaucus Junction and leads south along the Northeast Corridor before it opens in the new Hudson tunnel. Penn Station is to be extended by a 6 -track railway terminus at 34th Street.

The plans for the new tunnel was transferred under Governor Christine Todd Whitman the Republican (Rep.) in 1995 in the ARC project. The construction was begun, although in June 2009, but the work was stopped again already on 9 October 2010 by the newly elected Republican governor of New Jersey Chris Christie, because the financing of the expected additional costs is unclear. The opening was originally supposed to take place in 2019.

Project Overview

The project consists of the following parts:

  • Two tunnels under the New Jersey Palisades and the Hudson through. They extend in an arc southwest along the existing tunnel of the Northeast Corridor and crossing into Manhattan the access to the existing Penn Station. The outputs open directly into the new station.
  • Sechsgleisiger underground railway terminus, in the planning as New York Pennsylvania Station Extension ( NYPSE ) refers. The train station is north of the existing Penn Station under 34th Street to lie and provides access to the subways.
  • Track loop at Secaucus Junction to tie the Main Line / Bergen County Line and Pascack Valley Line to the track.
  • Additional storage plant in Kearny (New Jersey)

Initially, it was also thought about a connection from the ARC tunnel to the existing Penn Station, which Penn Station Connector would have meant. This idea was dropped back, either because the ramp would have been very steep or have extensive embankments at the bottom of the Hudson River would have been necessary. In addition, the route in Manhattan should have been created in an open design, which would have been associated with a high compensation to the riparian site.
