Acetolacton or α - Acetolacton is an organic compound with the molecular formula C2H2O2. It is the smallest representative of the lactones and can also be referred to as the epoxide of the ketene. The compound was first described in 1997 as a short-lived species in mass spectrometry experiments.

Although Acetolacton could not be isolated in larger amounts, the similar compound is bis (trifluoromethyl) acetolacton ( (CF3) 2C2O2 ) is known, which is stabilized by two trifluoromethyl slightly and a half-life of 8 hours ( 25 ° C).
