Acinetobacter

Acinetobacter baumannii

Bacteria of the genus Acinetobacter are common species belonging to the group of gamma -proteobacteria. They are Gram- negative and usually resistant to penicillin and chloramphenicol.

Acinetobacter as pathogens

The most common baumannii is observed in clinical practice, which is often nosocomially transmitted and can cause wound infections, pneumonia and meningitis A.. For meningitis but is usually A. lwoffii cause. There are also frequent infections with A. Junii, A. haemolyticus and A. johnsnii encountered. Overall, it knows about 20 species. Especially in A. baumannii is expected to multi-drug resistance.

In January 2008, a multidrug-resistant strain of Acinetobacter brought the operation of the intensive care unit of the hospital Enschede ( Netherlands) to an almost complete halt. The military secured with two mobile intensive care units, the continued operation.
