The Institute of Acoustics Research (ISF, Eng. ARI ) is a research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS ) in Vienna. It was founded in 1972 as the Commission on sound research, transformed into a research position in 1994 and has existed since 2000 as an institute for sound research.

Research priorities

The ISF is a multidisciplinary research organization, examines the issues in the field of acoustics science. In the context of application-oriented basic research relationships along the " sound chain ", researched by the generation and propagation to perception. The Institute deals with the following topics of acoustics:

  • Acoustic Phonetics
  • Psychoacoustic and Experimental Audiology
  • Physical and Computational Acoustics
  • Mathematics and signal processing in acoustics.

Current research projects include the investigation and improvement of the localization of sound sources in carriers of neural prostheses, called cochlear implants, modeling and improvement of noise protection measures in the car and rail traffic, the phonetic analysis of regional dialects and the mathematical modeling of speech production systems; furthermore, the improvement of perceptual coding algorithms (such as MP3) by means of mathematical models, based on the study of dynamic properties of the auditory system, in particular the feedback between the peripheral and more central processing stages, and the further development of the mathematical theory of signal representation optimized for issues of production and perception of sound.
