Adel is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Cook County and is its administrative headquarters. It is believed that the first white settlers here already in 1860s settled down. End of the 19th century, the settlement as " Puddleville " (from English: puddle for puddle ) is known, based on the numerous water puddles that covered the then unpaved streets of the town after a rain event. According to tradition, the postmaster, Joel J. " Uncle Jack" Parrish has the " nobility" of the middle letter of Philadelphia ( Phil - adel - phia ) was formed and proposed as a new place name. In 1889 the site under a new name, then still charged as part of Berrien County, to the city. At the foundation of Cook County in 1913, Adel was appointed to the County Seat.

Geography

Needle is centrally located in Cook County. The nearby towns are Sparks, Cecil and Lenox. The nearest major town, Albany, is located about 96 kilometers north-west, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 329 kilometers north. The city covers an area of 20.7 km ².

Population

According to the census of 2000, the population is 5,307, of which 46.3 % men and 53.7 % women. The average age of the people of nobility is 33.6 years. 48.9 % of residents are African American, 48 % White, and 3.8 % Hispanics. The average annual income per household is $ 23,908 with far below the U.S. average ( $ 41,994 ). Approximately 27.4 % of the population live below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is much higher than the U.S. average (12.4%).

Public institutions

Adel has two public schools, the Cook County High School and the Cook Primary School. Furthermore, located in the city a public library and a hospital, the Memorial Hospital of Adel. A popular recreational area is the Reed Bingham State Park in the west of the city.

Structures

The SOWEGA building from 1931, called for its terracotta ornaments in the form of watermelons as Watermelon Building, and built in the years 1938/39, Gerichtsbebäude of nobility are recorded in the cultural monument list of the U.S. federal government.
