Berrien County (Georgia)

The Berrien County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Nashville.

Geography

The County is located in southern Georgia and has an area of 1,186 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Coffee County, Atkinson County, Lanier County, Lowndes County, Cook County, Tift County and Irwin County. The main cities are Alapaha, Enigma, Nashville and Ray City.

History

The Berrien County was formed on February 25, 1856 from portions of Coffee, Irwin, and Lowndes County and named after John MacPherson Berrien, a U.S. Senator, who was attorney general under President Andrew Jackson. The County had one of the first post- roads in the United States, the Coffee Road. It was opened in 1823 and led to Florida.
