Coffee County (Georgia)
The Coffee County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), Douglas, which was according to Stephen A. Douglas, the opponent of Abraham Lincoln in the election campaign of 1860, named.
Geography
The County is located in the central southeast of Georgia, in the West located about 180 km from the Atlantic Ocean and to the south about 120 miles from Florida. It has an area of 1561 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jeff Davis County, Bacon County, Ware County, Atkinson County, Berrien County, Irwin County, Ben Hill County and Telfair County.
History
Coffee County was on February 9, 1854 from parts of Clinch County, of Irwin County, the Telfair County and Ware County formed. It was named after John E. Coffee, a general who emerged from the Indian Wars of 1812 as a hero.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Coffee County 37 413 people in 13,354 households and 9,788 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 68.23 percent White, 25.88 percent Black or African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.56 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.04 percent from other races groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.82 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,354 households out of which 37.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.5 percent were married couples living together, 15.2 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent of all households and 8.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.14 persons.
28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,710, and the median income for a family $ 35,936. Males had a median income of $ 26,642, women $ 20,644. The per capita income was $ 15,530. 15.3 percent of families and 19.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
