Stephens County (Georgia)

The Stephens County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Toccoa, named after an Indian word that means something like beautiful.

Geography

The County is located in the north of Georgia, bordered on the northeast by South Carolina and is in the north about 40 miles from North Carolina. It has an area of 477 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Franklin County, Banks County and Habersham County.

History

Stephens County was formed on August 18, 1905 from parts of Franklin County and the Habersham County. It was named after Alexander Hamilton Stephens, a vice president of the Confederacy and governor of Georgia.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 25,435 people in Stephens County. 23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.5 percent between 18 to 24, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.9 males.
