Greene County (Georgia)
The Greene County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Greensboro.
Geography
The County is located in north-central Georgia and is in the northeast about 60 miles from South Carolina. It has an area of 1052 square kilometers, of which 47 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Oglethorpe County, Taliaferro County, Hancock County, Putnam County, Morgan County and Oconee County.
History
Greene County was formed on February 3, 1786 as 11 County in Georgia from parts of Washington County. It was named for General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Greene County 15,534 people in 5,477 households and 4,042 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 52.95 percent White, 44.45 percent Black or African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.49 percent from other races groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.92 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,477 households out of which 29.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers and 26.2 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households and 10.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 persons and the average family size was 3.02 persons.
25.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 24.3 percent between 25 and 44, 27.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,479, and the median income for a family $ 39,794. Males had a median income of $ 31,295, women $ 20,232. The per capita income was $ 23,389. 16.0 percent of families and 22.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
