Washington County (Georgia)
The Washington County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sandersville.
Geography
The County is located in the middle Nordodten of Georgia, is about 90 km from the border of South Carolina and has an area of 1773 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Glascock County, Jefferson County, Johnson County, Wilkinson County, Baldwin County and Hancock County.

Washington County was formed on February 25 in 1784, when 10 County of Georgia and as an original county. It was named after President George Washington. The first settlers were veterans of the Revolutionary War, who were paid a piece of land for their services.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 21 176 people in Washington County. Of these, 1,452 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 7,435 households and 5,382 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 45.73 percent White, 53.20 percent Black or African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.20 percent from other races groups; 0.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.63 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,435 households out of which 34.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.7 percent were married couples living together, 21.5 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent of all households and 10.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17 persons.
26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 to 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 81.5 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,910, and the median income for a family $ 36,325. Males have a median income of $ 33,263, women $ 21,388. The per capita income was $ 15,565. 18.7 percent of families and 22.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
