Charlton County, Georgia
The Charlton County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Folkston, which had been the self-proclaimed capital of the weddings for many years. Many wishing to marry drove across the country to get married here, as there was no waiting for the squad.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme southeast of Georgia, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the south by Florida. It has an area of 2028 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Brantley County, Camden County and Ware County.
History
Charlton County was formed as a 110 County on February 18, 1854 from parts of Camden County. It was named for Robert M. Charlton of Savannah, a U.S. Senator and early lawyers in Georgia.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Charlton County 10,282 people in 3,342 households and 2,499 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 68.59 percent White, 29.26 percent Black or African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.14 percent from other races groups; 1.21 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.79 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,342 households out of which 37.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.4 percent were married couples living together, 15.0 percent were single mothers and 25.2 percent were non-families. 21.8 percent of all households and 8.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.
27.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6 percent between 18 to 24, 31.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 112.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 27,869, and the median income for a family $ 33,364. Males have a median income of $ 26,631, women $ 17,978. The per capita income was $ 12,920. 17.8 percent of families and 20.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
