Webster County (Georgia)

The Webster County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Preston.

Geography

The County is located in the central southwest Georgia, is located in the west about 45 miles from Alabama and has an area of 545 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Sumter County, Terrell County, Randolph County, Stewart County and Marion County.

History

Webster County was formed on 16 December 1853 as 103 County Georgia from parts of Stewart County. It was named after Daniel Webster.

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,390 people in Webster County. Of which 2 persons were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 911 households and 675 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 50.5 percent white, 47.0 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American and 1.6 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.8 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 911 households out of which 31.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.9 percent were married couples living together, 16.8 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households and 12.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.07.

25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 to 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 101.0 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,992, and the median income for a family $ 32,462. Males have a median income of $ 26,444, women $ 19,125. The per capita income was $ 14,772. 17.2 percent of families and 19.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
