Richmond County (Georgia)

The Richmond County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Augusta, named after Augusta of Saxe- Gotha, Princess of Wales, and was from 1785 to 1795 the capital of Georgia.

Geography

The County is located in Northeast Georgia, on the border of South Carolina and has an area of 851 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Burke County, Jefferson County, McDuffie County and Columbia County.

History

Richmond County was formed on February 5, 1777 Original County. It was named after the British Duke of Richmond. From the Richmond County following counties were later formed: Columbia County, Glascock County and McDuffie County and parts of counties: Jefferson County and Warren County.
