Richmond County (Georgia)
The Richmond County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Augusta, named after Augusta of Saxe- Gotha, Princess of Wales, and was from 1785 to 1795 the capital of Georgia.
Geography
The County is located in Northeast Georgia, on the border of South Carolina and has an area of 851 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Burke County, Jefferson County, McDuffie County and Columbia County.
History
Richmond County was formed on February 5, 1777 Original County. It was named after the British Duke of Richmond. From the Richmond County following counties were later formed: Columbia County, Glascock County and McDuffie County and parts of counties: Jefferson County and Warren County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 199 775 people in Richmond County. Of these, 10,911 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 73,920 households and 49,526 families. The population density was 238 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 45.55 percent White, 49.75 percent Black or African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 1.50 percent Asian, 0.12 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.01 percent from other races groups; 1.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 73,920 households out of which 33.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 41.8 percent were married couples living together, 20.8 percent were single mothers and 33.0 percent were non-families. 27.7 percent of all households and 8.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.13 persons.
26.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 12.0 percent between 18 and 24, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,086, and the median income for a family $ 38,509. Males have a median income of $ 29,667, women $ 22,760. The per capita income was $ 17,088. 16.2 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
