Chatham County (Georgia)

The Chatham County is located in the U.S. state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Savannah. In the 2000 census, the county had 232 028 inhabitants and a population density of 204 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Georgia, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and the North East to South Carolina. It has an area of 1638 square kilometers, of which 503 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bryan County and Effingham County.

History

Chatham County was formed as the third county in Georgia from the Christ Church Parish and part of St. Phillip 's Parish on 5 February 1777. It was named after the British Prime Minister William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham.

Historical buildings

Savannah

In Savannah is the historic Juliette Gordon Low Historic District. It consists of three blocks ( Wayne - Gordon House: First Girl Scout Headquarters, Andrew Low House and the Carriage House ) and was accepted as a historical monument with the number 66,000,276 on 15 October 1966 by the National Register of Historic Places. It is also listed on the National Historic Landmark.

In Savannah, on East Gordon Street at number 207 is the historic Massie Common School House.

Tybee Iceland

On Tybee Iceland is an attraction in the historic Fort Screven Historic District. It was recorded in 1982 as a national monument (NRHP 82,002,393 ).

Chatham County was home to several United mainly in the states of famous people: Joseph Habersham, the first Postmaster General of the United States, Juliette Gordon Lowe, the founder of the Girl Scouts ( Girl Scouts ) and the musician and songwriter Johnny Mercer.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000, lived in Chatham County 232 048 people in 89 865 households, and 59,400 families. The population density was 204 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 55.28 percent White, 40.50 percent Black or African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 1.73 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.89 percent from other races groups; 1.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.33 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 89 865 households out of which 30.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.2 percent were married couples living together, 17.0 percent were single mothers and 33.9 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent of all households and 9.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.

25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.2 percent between 18 and 24, 29.5 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,752, and the median income for a family $ 46,125. Males have a median income of $ 35,132, women $ 24,686. The per capita income was $ 21,152. 11.8 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
