Talbot County (Georgia)

The Talbot County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Talbotton.

Geography

The County is located in western Georgia, located about 50 km away from Alabama and has an area of 1022 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Upson County, Taylor County, Marion County, Chattahoochee County, Muscogee County, Harris County and Meriwether County.

History

Talbot County was formed on December 14, 1827 as 74 County from portions of Muscogee County. It was named after Governor Matthew Talbot, who was also President of the Senate of Georgia.

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,498 people in Talbot County. Of these, 17 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 2,538 households and 1,824 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.8 percent white, 61.6 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and 0.3 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.3 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,538 households out of which 28.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.8 percent were married couples living together, 20.2 percent were single mothers and 28.1 percent were non-families. 25.4 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.06.

24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 to 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.5 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,611, and the median income for a family $ 35,208. Males had a median income of $ 29,186, women $ 19,438. The per capita income was $ 14,539. 19.9 percent of families and 24.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
