Calhoun County (Georgia)

The Calhoun County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. Administrative office ( County Seat) is Morgan, which was after General Daniel Morgan, an important figure in the revolution war, named.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Georgia and in the west is about 40 miles from Alabama and south about 100 miles from Florida. It has an area of 734 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Terrell County, Dougherty County, Baker County, Early County, Clay County and Randolph County.

History

Calhoun County was formed on February 20, 1854 from parts of Baker County and Early County. It was named for John C. Calhoun, a senator from South Carolina, and Vice President of the United States. The County Courthouse burned in 1888 and 1920 respectively to the foundation walls.

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,320 people in Calhoun County. Of these, 1,315 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,962 households and 1,347 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 38.3 percent white, 60.6 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.4 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.5 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.0 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,962 households out of which 31.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 41.7 percent were married couples living together, 23.2 percent were single mothers and 31.3 percent were non-families. 28.7 percent of all households and 12.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.

22.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.3 percent between 18 to 24, 33.3 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 130.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 139.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,588, and the median income for a family $ 31,019. Males have a median income of $ 25,552, women $ 16,554. The per capita income was $ 11,839. 23.2 percent of families and 26.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
