Clarke County (Georgia)
The Clarke County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Athens.
Geography
The County is located in north-central Georgia, is in the northeast about 80 miles from South Carolina and in the north about 180 miles from Tennessee away. It has an area of 314 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water, and bordered clockwise to the following counties: Madison County, Oglethorpe County, Oconee County, Barrow County and Jackson County.
History
Clarke County was formed on December 5, 1801 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after Elijah Clarke, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Clarke County 101 489 people in 39 706 households and 19 694 families. The population density was 324 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 64.89 percent White, 27.25 percent Black or African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 3.13 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.08 percent from other races groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.34 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 39 706 households out of which 22.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 32.6 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers and 50.4 percent were non-families. 29.7 percent of all households and 5.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
17.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 31.3 percent between 18 to 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 15.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 8.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,403, and the median income for a family $ 41,607. Males had a median income of $ 30,482, women $ 23,069. The per capita income was $ 17,123. 14.8 percent of families and 28.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
