Clarke County (Georgia)

The Clarke County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Athens.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Georgia, is in the northeast about 80 miles from South Carolina and in the north about 180 miles from Tennessee away. It has an area of 314 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water, and bordered clockwise to the following counties: Madison County, Oglethorpe County, Oconee County, Barrow County and Jackson County.

History

Clarke County was formed on December 5, 1801 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after Elijah Clarke, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
