Screven County, Georgia
The Screven County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sylvania.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme east of Georgia, on the border of South Carolina and has an area of 1698 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Effingham County, Bulloch County, Jenkins County and Burke County.
History
Screven County was formed on December 14, 1793 14 County of Georgia from parts of Burke County and Effingham County. It was named for General James Screven, who was mortally wounded in the Revolutionary War. From the Screven County was formed later, the Bulloch County and the Jenkins County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 15,374 people in Screven County. Of these, 309 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,797 households and 4,104 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 53.56 percent White, 45.29 percent Black or African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.20 percent from other races groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.96 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,797 households out of which 33.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.0 percent were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 26.5 percent of all households and 11.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14 persons.
27.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 to 24, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,312, and the median income for a family $ 34,753. Males had a median income of $ 30,228, women $ 20,154. The per capita income was $ 13,894. 15.5 percent of families and 20.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
