Adémar de Chabannes

Ademar of Chabannes (* 989 in Chabannes (now the district of Saint- Sylvestre, Haute- Vienne), † 1034) was a French monk and chronicler, who wrote the first annals of Aquitaine since Late Antiquity, but he also appeared as a composer as well as a literary counterfeiters in appearance.

Life

Ademar was educated at the Benedictine monastery of Saint -Martial in Limoges and spent his life there or in Saint- Cybard monastery in Angoulême.

He is the author chronicles his major work is the Chronicon Aquitanicum et Francicum or Historia Francorum in three books, which deals with the Frankish story of the legendary king Faramund by the year 1028.

The first two books are nothing more than a copy of the Gesta regum Francorum of Aimoin of Fleury, the third book, however, which includes the period from 814-1028, is of considerable historical value. It was in the Monumenta Historica Scriptores Germaniae, Volume IV ( Hanover and Berlin, 1826-1892 ) published. He also wrote the commemoratio abbatum Lemovicensium Basilicae S. Martialis apostoli (848-1029) and the Epistola ad Jordanum Lemovicensem episcopum et alios de apostolatu S. Martialis, both by Migne Patrologia Latina in the, band CXLI (Paris, 1844-1855 ) published.

He died in 1034, probably in Jerusalem, where he had set out on a pilgrimage.

Fakes

He welcomed the evolving legend that St. Martial, Bishop of Limoges of the 3rd century, the Christianized the Limousin, have actually lived centuries earlier and was one of the apostles. And he added the more than scanty information about the alleged apostles Martial only to a fake biography, as if they came from Martial's successor, Bishop Aurelian, and then komponoierte to substantiate his claims, an " Apostolic Mass", which in Ademars survived his own handwriting is (Paris Bibliothèque nationale de France, MS Latin 909), and thus the oldest autograph of Western music was. The local bishop and abbot seem to have supported his work, as the show was premiered on August 3, 1029.

Unfortunately for Ademar was the liturgy of a traveling monk, Benedict of Chiusa, busted, who described the improved Vita Martial than provincial forgery and blasphemy. Ademars reaction was to put on fake forgery: he invented a council of 1031, which confirmed the apostolic status of Martial, and a papal letter to. The truth to this pathological tissue of lies was unraveled only in the 1920s by Louis Saltet, from the Catholic side, the findings were ignored until the 1990s.

Until then, Ademar was successful. In the late 11th century martial was actually worshiped in Aquitaine as an apostle.
