Adolf Friedrich von Schack

Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack ( born August 2, 1815 in Schwerin, † April 14, 1894 in Rome ) was a German poet, literary and art historians.

Life

Schack was the son of the lawyer (?) And (1819 ) Chancery Vice Director Christoph von Schack ( born August 1, 1780 in Groß Raden ) and his wife, Wilhelmine born of Kossel (* March 10, 1792 Voigtsdorf, Ksp. Roggenstorf ) in the Schwerin born belonging Schelfstadt, where his birthplace is preserved. Between 1834 and 1838 he studied law in Bonn, Heidelberg and Berlin. After he entered the Prussian civil service and was appointed to the Court of Berlin. However, it fatigued the work there and he quit the service.

Having had traveled from Schack Italy, Egypt and Spain, he returned to Germany. He went to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. There he was sent employees in the civil service in 1849 as a representative to Berlin. He held until 1852, and then returned to his estate in Zülow in Mecklenburg back this diplomatic post. He had let build a new manor house in late Classicist style in 1845 in the neighboring town of Stralendorf Zülow.

He then went to Spain to study the history of the Moors.

In 1855 he moved to Munich. There he was in 1856 appointed honorary member of the Academy of Sciences. In addition, he built up a collection of valuable paintings from the 19th century. The collection Schack ( "Schack -Galerie" ), although he bequeathed to Kaiser Wilhelm II, still based in Munich.

Above all, his work poetry and art of the Arabs in Spain and Sicily is considered an important contribution to the art and literary history. 1886 a large part of his work was published in Collected Works ( six volumes ). A year later, von Schack published his autobiography under the title A half century, memories and records. Posthumously published in 1896 still Posthumous seals.

Schack found his final resting place in the family vault in the 1853 built in the Gothic Revival style mausoleum in the churchyard in Stralendorf at Schwerin. Was the mausoleum threatened as a cultural monument in 1987 by the demolition, began in 1991, jointly by the parish, the Mayor and the historic preservation first backup and restoration works.
