Adolf II of Waldeck

Adolf II of Waldeck (c. 1258; † December 12, 1302 in Liège ) was Count of Waldeck and later elected bishop of Liege. As such, it bore the name of Adolf I.

Life

He was the eldest son of Henry III. of Waldeck. His mother was Matilda of Cuyk - Arnsberg, a daughter of Count Gottfried III. of Arnsberg.

First, he was the successor of his grandfather Adolf I as Count of Waldeck. A contract with his brothers ruled that only those who should be the real heritage of the county, who would marry Sophie of Hesse. In his reign falls a sentence of excommunication of the Archbishop of Mainz against him and his mother because they had stood by the Landgrave of Hesse against Mainz.

Since Adolf marriage failed, he renounced his claim to power. Otto I of Schwalenberg - Waldeck became ruler in Waldeck. The other brother Gottfried was Bishop of Minden.

How this came Adolf into the clerical state. He was a canon in Liege and provost in Trier and Utrecht. In 1301 he was appointed by the Pope as Bishop of Liege. He moved with a large following in Liege. In the city ruled conflicts between clergy and citizenship. Adolf was able to produce the unity again.
