Adolf Kratzer

Adolf Kratzer ( born October 16, 1893 in Günzburg an der Donau, † July 6, 1983 in Münster ) was a German theoretical physicist who contributions to atomic physics and molecular physics delivered and was considered an authority in the field of molecular spectroscopy.

Scratches studied physics from 1912 to 1914 at the Technical University of Munich (now Technical University of Munich). After two years of military service, he resumed his studies again, this time at the University of Munich under Professor Arnold Sommerfeld. In 1920 he received his Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis on band spectra of molecules. In Munich scratches Sommerfeld became an assistant. During this time, advanced scratch the theory of diatomic molecular spectroscopy by including anharmonic forces between the nuclei, thus changing the oscillation frequencies. Sommerfeld set to work and again his colleague, the mathematician David Hilbert at Göttingen qualified employees as personal assistants for physics available. Scratches was 1920/1921 in Göttingen. On his return to Munich was scratches lecturer. In this time he met Werner Heisenberg know, who was also a student of Sommerfeld.

On the basis of his work was published in Munich 1922, the detailed analysis of scratch cyanide spectroscopic bands. His analysis led to the introduction of half - integral quantum numbers for the evaluation of molecular rotation. In 1922 he was appointed as professor of theoretical physics at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster. Here delivered scratches contributions to quantum mechanics and was an authority in the field of molecular spectroscopy.

At this time there were three development centers for quantum mechanics and the interpretation of atomic and molecular structure, on the basis of atomic and molecular spectroscopy, in particular the Bohr-Sommerfeld 's atomic model: the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Munich under Arnold Sommerfeld, the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Göttingen under Max Born and the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen under Niels Bohr. These three institutions formed an effective community for the exchange of staff and researchers. By Sommerfeld enabled physicists such as scratches and other trained, these were the call to other facilities to effective branches of the Sommerfeld Institute for Theoretical Physics. This was especially true for scratches to when he went to Munster on Sommerfeld's former student Paul Peter Ewald, who was appointed professor at the Technical University of Stuttgart.

Scratches published a number of books on physics, on the basis of his lectures on electrodynamics, mechanics, optics, relativity, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics ( wave mechanics ). About transcendental functions he wrote a book together with Walter Franz, another Sommerfeld students and scratch later successor to the chair of theoretical physics in Münster. The Scratch potential to be a central force in molecular physics, was named after him.

Although scratches belonged to no Nazi organization, he was from 1937 to 1942 and Dean of the Faculty from 1943 Vice-Rector of the University of Münster. The British military government confirmed him directly as vice-rector; together with the Rector Georg Schreiber he reached that largely destroyed university was opened at the end of 1945. More than 30 years he devoted himself intensively to promote students; he was one of the "fathers " of the Honnefer model. When he retired in 1962 at the age of 69, he became an honorary senator of the University and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

His students included Hans Hermes and Karl -Heinz Bennemann.
