Adolf Sandberger

Adolf Wilhelm August Sandberger ( born December 19, 1864 in Würzburg, † January 14, 1943 in Munich) was a German musicologist and composer.

Life

The son of the geologist Fridolin Sandberger was in Würzburg composition pupil of Max Meyer- Olbersleben and then studied composition in Munich with Josef Rheinberger. Then he took at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University Berlin courses in musicology with Philipp Spitta and in 1887 received his doctorate with a thesis on Peter Cornelius.

From 1889 was curator at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, in 1894 he habilitated in and taught first as a lecturer, from 1900 then as a professor of music history at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University. He was the founder of the Society for the Publication of the Monuments of Music in Bavaria, which published the achtunddreißigbändige series Monuments of Music in Bavaria and led the company until 1932. Moreover, he gave 1894-1927 the works of Orlando di Lasso and from 1924 to 1942, the New Beethoven Yearbook.

Sandberger was the teacher of Werner Egk, Felix Raabe, Hans von Benda, Eugene Schmitz and Heinrich Strobel. In addition to orchestral works and operas he composed chamber music, piano pieces and songs.
