Adolphe Pinard

Adolphe Pinard ( born February 4, 1844 in Méry -sur- Seine, in the same canton, † March 1, 1934 ) was a French obstetrician.

Life and work

Pinard was in 1874 at the Sorbonne in Paris with a dissertation entitled " Nouvelles recherches de Pelvimetry et de pelvigraphie, sur la forme et les diamètres antero- Posterieurs de 100 basins viciés representes de grandeur naturelle. " ( New pelvimetrische and pelvigrafische studies on the shape and antero -posterior diameter doctorate of 100 pools of insufficient natural size. ). He worked in Paris, where he later was assistant to Étienne Stéphane Tarnier (1828-1897) professor of obstetrics. He is considered the father of modern perinatal care and the " puériculture movement " ( baby care ) and was President of the French Society of eugenics.

Adolphe Pinard established obstetric Palpationsverfahren and the so-called Pinard maneuver for delivery in breech presentation. In 1895 he developed a stethoscope to listen wood ( auscultation ) of the baby's heart, which is still used in obstetrics.

As an elected representative (1919-1928), he handed in November 1926 a bill in which he called for a certificate of absence of communicable diseases before marriage.

Pinard was a big proponent of breastfeeding ( " The milk of the mother is part of the child " ) and condemned the use of the pacifier. ( "Remember that in an effort to calm babies, they are often much more harm than good .")

In honor of Adolphe Pinard obstetric clinic of the University Hospital of Nancy and a boulevard in Paris are named after him.
