Adrian of tulips thief was the first German television series that was broadcast in full color. The six episodes, with Heinz Reincke as the main character were already aired in the test program for the German color television in 1966 based on the novel by Otto Rombach under the direction of Dietrich Haugk first time. The official launch of color television in Germany was only on 25 August 1967. The series was repeated in the ARD evening program later.

In the Netherlands, the year 1637 the Torfknecht Adrian steals the night from the garden of his employer Hendrik van der Maassen three precious tulip bulbs and replace them with ordinary onions. With tulip bulbs you can get rich quickly the time ( Large tulip mania ), but Adrian has to come up with some lies on the sale of "his" tulips. With the money Adrian acquires more tulip bulbs and is gradually to "Tulips King " and now wants to get married. His wooing of the van Maassen housekeeper Christintje however unsuccessful, and she is waiting for the captain of the van Maassen ship " Zuiderland " Josiah. Shortly after Adrian has made the sale of the most expensive of all the tulip bulbs, the "Semper Augustus " perfectly, the long overdue Josiah reappears and makes a serious error: he holds the "Semper Augustus " for an ordinary common onion and eats it with relish to a Heringsmahl. Adrian faces bankruptcy.
