Adrian Wewer

Adrian Wewer ( born April 14, 1836 in Harsewinkel, † March 15 1914 in San Francisco, called Brother Adrian Wewer ) was a German monk who became important for his church buildings in the United States.

Life

Born as Anthony Wewer age of 22, he joined the Franciscan Order. When Brother Adrian in 1858 he put his religious vows and profession in the Franciscan monastery in Warendorf.

At the request of Bishop Henry Damian Junker of Alton, Illinois, monks should come to America to start work in the diocese of Alton. 1862 brother Adrian traveled with four other monks of Wiedenbrück to America. Brother Adrian was an excellent carpenter and designed with other brothers Gothic altars and other furniture for the first St. Francis Church in Quincy.

He was one of the most important church builder in America and designed to 1900 more than 100 church buildings from New York to California to Oregon.
