Adrianus Petit Coclico

Adrianus Petit Coclico (also: Coclicus ) (* 1499 in Flanders, † 1562 or 1563 in Copenhagen ) was a music theorist, singer and composer.

Life

His life before 1545, little is known, he himself has claimed that he was pupil of Josquin. Maybe he was in the service of the French king, held under Pope Paul III. in Rome. After that he worked as a music teacher, but it resulted in a restless, wandering life, which eventually led him through short activities in Wittenberg, Frankfurt an der Oder, Stettin, Königsberg, Nuremberg ( 1552) and Wismar to Copenhagen ( 1556 ). There he worked as a singer in the court chapel until his death.

Works

He created several motets, where he placed special emphasis on expressiveness and accurate word expression. This technique was taken up by quite a few later composers. In Nuremberg, wrote and be published Colclico "Compendium musices " in which he defined as the first music theorist style of the " Musica reservata ": " Vere musicus est et habetur, non qui de numeri, prolationibus, signis ac valoribus multa novit garrire et scribere, sed qui Docte et dulciter CanIt, cuilibet notae debitam syllabam applicans ac ita Componit, ut verbis laetis laetos AddAt numeros et e contra " In the same year Coclico gives his " Consolationes piae ex psalmis Davidicis out " under the title" Musica reservata ".
