Advanced Function Presentation ( AFP abbreviation ) is a format for the print data stream in the production of bulk printing pieces. The abbreviation AFP is also used by IBM as an abbreviation for " Advanced Function Printing ". As of 1995, it was renamed " Advanced Function Presentation ".

The print data is converted from a printer driver program (IBM PSF print services facility or IPM infoprint manager ) to IPDS. IPDS stands for " Intelligent Printer Data Stream" ( refer Raster Image Processor). For on-screen display, an AFP viewer is needed. An AFP data stream ( AFPDS ) consists of compound documents ( MO: DCA mixed object document content architecture ) with text, visual content, fonts and barcodes.

IPDS is a bidirectional data stream that drives the machine, especially interesting for logging already printed pages (eg on large orders with scrolling pages ). IPDS is the protocol that is used between the printer driver program (PSF or IPM) and printers.

AFP is a registered trademark of IBM.
