Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver

The Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver ( AMANDA ) provides a rating based on the client - server principle, automated backup solution.

The backup server requires its clients periodically on full or incremental backups. These are then cached on a so-called holding disk if necessary, and then written to the tape in the tape drive and the tapes in the tape library or a virtual tape library.

AMANDA can optionally require tar or dump / restore. The tapes can then be prepared with the appropriate computer programs, or with amrestore again. Instead of physical and virtual bands bands can be used, for example in the form of files on the RAID array. The program is designed as a complete solution. It provides management functions for used tapes and tape changer and label printers can address.

2007 Amanda was called together with BackupPC and Bacula as one of the three most popular open source backup utilities.
