Description

Vegetative characteristics

Aeonium hierrense grows as a perennial, unbranched or rarely slightly branched, monocarper shrub, reaching heights of growth of up to 1.5 meters. The bare, reticulate patterned, ascending shoots have a diameter of 20 to 45 millimeters. Their relatively flat rosettes reach a diameter of 15 to 60 centimeters. The obovate to lanceolate wrong, green, strongly tinged bluish, almost bare leaves are 8-30 inches long, 5-8 inches wide and 0.3 to 0.7 inches thick. Towards the peak, they are pointed, truant and often bent back. The base is wedge-shaped. The leaf margin is occupied with slightly curved eyelashes, which are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The leaves are often reddish or pink variegat.

Generative features

The dome-shaped inflorescence has a length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a width of 12 to 50 centimeters. The peduncle is 5-25 inches long. The six-to neunzähligen flowers are at a 2-6 mm long, slightly downy hairy flower stalk. Their sepals are slightly pubescent. The whitish, often pink in the middle part variegaten, lanceolate, pointed petals are 7-9 mm long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide. The stamens are slightly pubescent.

Systematics and distribution

Aeonium hierrense is common on La Palma and El Hierro, at altitudes up to 1200 meters.

The first description as Sempervivum hierrense by Richard Paget Murray was published in 1899. Charles- Joseph Marie Pitard and Louis Proust set the style in 1909 in the genus Aeonium.
