Æthelbert of Sussex

Aethelberht (also: Æthelbert, Æthelbryht, Adelbertus, Ethelbertus, Ethilbercht; fl. 733/757 ) was a king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex in the middle of the 8th century.

Life

The chronology is very uncertain because of the weak source location of the 8th century for Sussex. Aethelberht is only known from three charters, form the only source of information on his dates. Its origin is unknown, but he was possibly a son of King Æthelstans.

The exact circumstances of his reign are unclear. It can be regarded as the successor of the dependent sub- kings of Wessex Nothhelm and Æthelstan. His reign could only be determined by the intersection with the term of office of the Bishop of Selsey Sigefrith. Probably followed by 758 Osmund as King in Sussex.
