Æthelwold (bishop of Lindisfarne)

Æthelwald of Lindisfarne (also Aethelwold, AEthelwald, Ethel forest; † 740) was an Anglo-Saxon saint and 721-740 Bishop of Lindisfarne.

Life

Æthelwald was born in Northumbria.

Legend has it that the then priest Æthelwald to 686 Bishop Cuthbert of Lindisfarne accompanied on his travels and witnessed how Cuthbert Æthelwalds sister of a protracted and painful illness healed.

Initially he was Prior and 695-721 he held in Mailros Monastery ( Melrose ) the office of abbot. In the year 721 he was ordained Bishop of Lindisfarne. He showed his respect for St. Cuthberts build an artfully crafted stone cross, on which his own name was inscribed.

The Lindisfarne Gospels, a book of his predecessor Eadfrith he was provided with a magnificent cover.

The importance of the monastery of Lindisfarne at this time recognized by the fact that King Ceolwulf of Northumbria, when he abdicated in 737, the monastery extensive lands bequeathed: (?) Bregesne ( Brainshaugh ) Werceworde, Wudecestre ( Woodchester ) Hwitingham ( Whittingham ), Eadulfingham ( Edlingham ) and Eagwulfingham ( Egglingham ), entered this monastery and spent the last 27 years of his life there.

Æthelwald died in 740 and was buried at Lindisfarne monastery there in the cathedral. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle year of his death is given as 737 notwithstanding.
