Afandou (Greek Αφάντου (n. sg. ) ) Is a town with 6,837 inhabitants on the east coast of the island and seat of the Municipality of Rhodes and municipality of the same name in the Greek region South Aegean. It is located about 15 kilometers from the island's capital, Rhodes.

Originally the place was by the sea. However, the local community decided to move their place in the inland hill behind after several Priatenüberfällen in the 7th century. Therefore, the name comes from by afantis (Greek αόρατος = invisible), Afandou is because the sea no cost.

Afandou was recognized along with Kolymbia ( 3661 Ew. ) In 1946 as an independent country community ( kinotita ) and 1994 township ( dimos ) levied. In 1997, the neighboring Archipolis was amalgamated in the Heart (546 inhabitants). On 1 January 2011 Afandou was a district of the now comprising the entire island community of Rhodes. This is divided into the towns of Afandou ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Αφάντου, with Kolymbia ) and Archipolis ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Αρχιπόλεως ).

Since 16 October 2001 there has been an official twinning with the German town of Gummersbach in North Rhine -Westphalia, in which there is a Afandou place since then. Conversely, there are in Afandou, where in the 1950s and 1960s, many Greek guest workers went to Gummersbach, Gummersbach one place. There is also a partnership with Castle in Saxony -Anhalt, which in turn has a partnership with Gummersbach.

In Afandou is located directly on the beach the only golf course of Rhodes.
