Affonso Eduardo Reidy

Affonso Eduardo Reidy ( born October 26, 1909 in Paris, † August 10, 1964 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian architect.

He is next to Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa as one of the most important representatives of Brazilian modernism. Along with Le Corbusier, Niemeyer, Costa and Jorge Machado Moreira, he was responsible for the planned 1937-1943 Ministry of Education and Health (now the Palace of Culture ) in Rio de Janeiro. Another major work Reidy is the 1954 built Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, whose gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx.

Life

The son of a British and a Brazilian began his architectural studies at the age of 17 years at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro. 1930-31, he worked as an assistant to Gregori Warchavchik. In 1931 he accepted an appointment as a professor at the Universidad Federal do Rio de Janeiro and from 1932 he was the chief architect of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
