Afghan presidential election, 2004

The presidential election in Afghanistan in 2004 was the first presidential election in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban regime in October 2001. Was elected on 9 October 2004, Hamid Karzai with 55.4 %. Some other candidates were Yunus Ghanuni with 16.3%, with 11.7% Mohaqiq Mohammed Abdul Rashid Dostum and with 10.0 %.

Election preparations

In the Petersberg Agreement of December 2001, a phased approach was agreed, inter alia, for the formation of a transitional administration and as the last step democratic elections.

In early 2003 began to support the UN mission (UNAMA ) with the preparations for the registration of Afghan voters.
