Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge

The bridge of friendship between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan is the only land link between the two countries. It is a combined road and rail bridge. It spans the Amu Darya River, which forms the border between the two countries, near the Uzbek city of Termez.

It was built in 1985 by the Soviet Army to supply its troops in Afghanistan. The closest bridge is located approximately 120 km downstream at the Turkmen- Afghan border town Kelif.

The bridge was closed in 1996, after the Taliban captured the city of Mazar -i -Sharif. The reopening took place on 9 December 2001.

The over the bridge leading broad-gauge railway line, which is connected through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan with the Russian railway network shall terminate immediately south of the bridge in the Afghan border town of Hayratan. An extension to Mazar -i -Sharif, about 75 km length is under construction since January 2010.
