Afro-American religion

As an African-American religions, the religions of African Americans are referred to collectively who came in the 16th century by the spread of African slaves to America and has its roots in African religions.

Similarities

Most Afro-American religions is the pantheon of Orishas together, which goes back to the religion of the Yoruba from West Africa. In many cases, they formed a syncretic synthesis of African and European religion, to get through a Christian facade of legitimacy for the exercise of their own customs and rites. Some religions have been also influenced by Indian religions.

Another commonality is Yoruba as Zeremonialsprache in many Afro-American religions. Important components of the Afro -American religions are animism and ancestor worship. For African heritage heard that the ceremonies are almost always accompanied by drum music. Often it is trance cultures.

Brazil

In Cuba, Santería is the dominant African-American religion. Another variety of Afro-American religions is the Palo.

Haiti

In Haiti, voodoo is the most widespread religion.

Jamaica

Obeah is practiced in Jamaica, but also in Suriname, the Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Belize, the Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and other Caribbean territories. Another variant in the eastern Jamaica is kumina.

No African-American religion is Rastafarian, although this is strongly related to the African continent. As a Christian religion that originated in the 1930s, but does not or hardly rooted in traditional African religions.

Suriname

In Suriname there are the Obeah religion and Winti.

USA

In North America the black African social order and their culture were destroyed during slavery. While African music forms partly in blues and other Black continued to live music, play African religions in the United States no longer matters.
