Agaton Giller

Agaton Giller ( born January 9, 1831 in Opatówek, Poland, † July 12, 1887 in Stanisławów, Galicia ) was a Polish historian, journalist and freedom fighter. He and his brother Stefan Giller played an important role in the Polish national movement.

Life

Currently Agaton Giller was Congress Poland under Russian sovereignty. Due to its patriotic activities Agaton Giller was exiled to Siberia in exile. He was the first biographer among exiled to Siberia Poland. During the January uprisings Giller was deputy in the National Congress. After the failure of the movement Giller went to Paris, France in exile. Here he acted as editor of several Polish newspapers. Example: " Ojczyzna " and " courier Paryski ". In Rapperswil, Switzerland, Giller founded the Polish Museum. The " National Polish Association " in the United States has named Agaton Giller to their " spiritual father ". Giller wrote several historical and biographical essays and articles. He died in 1887 in Stanisławów. His grave was reburied in 1980 by the closed cemetery in Stanisławów. Today, his remains rest in the cemetery in Warsaw Powązki.
