Agenian

Agenium is a regional level in the terrestrial Neogene of Europe. It corresponds to the MN zones 1 and 2 of the European land mammal chronology ( ELMMZ = " European Land Mammal Mega - Zones" ). It is overlaid by Orleanium and underlain by Arvernium the highest regional level of the terrestrial Paleogene.

History and type locality

The stage is named after the French city of Agen, near which the type locality is located.

Definition

The lower limit is defined by the insertion of the large mammalian species Hyotherium, in small mammals, it is the generic and the type Vasseuromys Rhodanomys schlosseri. The upper limit ( and thus the beginning of the Orleanium ) is defined by the first appearances of Gomphotherium, Procervulus, Lagomeryx, Actoocemas, Palaeomeryx, Brachyodus, Anchitherium, Aureliachoerus, Hemicyon ( large mammals ). The agenium is correlated with the chronostratigraphic stage of the Aquitanian. This corresponds in geochronology the period from 23 to 20.4 million years ago.

Subdivision

The stage is divided into three biozones MN 1 and. The stage is accordingly divided into Upper and Lower agenium.
