Agger (ancient Rome)

The term Agger ( Latin for " embankment ", " earth wall " ) generally refers to an earth structure, which was used in the Roman Empire for a variety of purposes.

Primarily, the term Agger is built of earth dams or embankments, which served for the attachment of Roman marching camp. A section of the Servian walls that protected the most vulnerable part near the Porta Esquilina, Agger Tarquinii or mostly short Agger was called. For the reinforcement of walls a Agger was unilaterally erected to make it difficult for breaking through the wall in an attack. The surface of the Agger was encased in some cases wood or brick. In addition to the name of ramparts were also called shore or harbor fortifications and the dam of Roman roads Agger.
