Aglow International

Aglow is the name of an international and interdenominational Christian Women's Association charismatic character. It was founded in Seattle (Washington / USA) in 1967 and is - by its own account - with about 4,600 local groups now active worldwide.

Name

Aglow is derived from the English adjective aglow ( German, glowing, radiant ') here and refers to the New Testament passage in the Bible Romans 12:11: Be fervent in spirit! (English Be aglow with the spirit ).

History

At the beginning of Aglow was a private prayer circle in the big American city of Seattle, which included only four women. Here, the idea of a Christian women's movement without the narrowness of denominational boundaries. The invitation for a first meeting, which took place in a hotel near the campus of Washington University in Seattle, followed by over a hundred women. A few months later emerged both in the state of Washington and in other states of the USA local organizations with the same objectives. As early as 1970 counted Aglow 60 local groups who invited once each month at a meeting of women. First groups outside the United States was founded in Canada and New Zealand. 1974 summed Aglow in the Netherlands foot, in Switzerland in 1977 and 1979, finally in Germany. A first European Aglow Conference was held in 1980 in Berlin, a second in 1985 in Hamburg. Both conferences contributed significantly to the spread of these charismatic women's movement in European countries.

Teaching

Theology Aglows largely oriented to the Apostles' Creed. However, the Aglow members stress the inspiration of the entire Bible by the Spirit of God. They also committed themselves to Pentecostal special doctrine of baptism by the Holy Spirit that manifests itself according to this view, especially in the gift of tongues. Church is according to their view, the whole of the body of Christ. Denominational barriers thereafter play only a minor role. However, we recommend the committed membership in a particular local church.

Functioning, organization and statistics

The starting point of Aglow work is the small local group that is involved in various spiritual, missionary and diaconal areas. It includes women of many different churches and free churches. Even Catholics are working with at Aglow. An important part of these encounters are Bible study, prayer, and the planning and implementation missionary oriented women's meetings, to which friends and neighbors are invited. Place of these events is often a rented secular space. The focus of the evening are in addition to music and a common food products and advice for women, which is usually followed by an invitation to personal Nachgesprächen.

In addition, Aglow women involved in various diaconal small projects, for example, support single mothers, providing practical help and neighborhood offer clothes exchanges.

Around 4600 local groups there at the time. They are in 172 worldwide ( in Europe: 40) represented countries and are supervised by a total of 21,000 employees responsible. According to information obtained by its Aglow offers about 17 million people a year.

At the national level Aglow work is led by a multi- member board, which is also responsible for the planning and conduct of national meetings and conferences as well as for the monitoring of local staff teams.

The headquarters of Aglow International is currently in Edmonds in the U.S. state of Washington. The International Board consists of 15 people. Eight board members are located in the United States and seven other countries.
