Baptism with the Holy Spirit

The baptism of the Spirit, actually " baptism in the Holy Spirit ," the meaning of baptism described in the Bible by Jesus Christ on the believer as the Baptist was foretold by John and Pentecost occurred for the first time and also recurring equipping for service with the Holy Spirit, according to Acts.

Mainly in circles of dispensationalism, ie in which the Bible is divided history of salvation, the baptism of the Spirit is seen as identical with the rebirth event. This is justified by the Scriptures 1 Corinthians 12:13 and Acts EU 11.1-18 EU. In other circles, however, it is seen as a separate event. This is due mainly to the scripture Acts 8.15 to 17 EU.

Pentecostalism

In a part of the Pentecostal movement, the baptism of the Spirit is regarded as a concrete tangible, independent of conversion and water baptism, independent and repeatable experience - but secondly also in other biblical context as a unique sealing with the Holy Spirit in regeneration. Here, the Holy Spirit fills the believer with power for service. You may be mediated by the imposition of hands, but also occur spontaneously or be alone sought in prayer. During the baptism of the Spirit which affected mostly show spiritual gifts as a sign. As an outward and visible sign is often expected that the party has been given the gift of tongues, this character is not explicitly required. Visible signs in the form of gifts of the Spirit belong to the Pentecostal movement to the full gospel, but are not considered as necessary for salvation.

Protestantism

In evangelical Protestantism, the baptism of the Spirit is usually equated with the rebirth must be preceded by repentance, repentance and faith. God offers to man as a free gift ( grace ) that this must, however, consciously accept. The Pentecostal movement sees itself in the character of evangelical, Protestant tradition and sees the sealing with the Holy Spirit in regeneration as special, unique shape because at the baptism of the Spirit, which is to be distinguished from the repeatable equipping with the Holy Spirit. Exceptions are in Protestantism numerous existing charismatic churches, which partly inspired by the position of Pentecostal movement.

In the classical Protestantism is less talk of the baptism of the Spirit. The rebirth is happening here in the water baptism (cf. Jn 3:5 EU), which takes place mostly at the infant. A " Yes " of the candidate can be anticipated for the valid consummation of the Baptism of the Deputy faith of the parents and godparents. However, a subsequent confirmation of the baptized is ( a conscious "yes" to God ) expects and is often illustrated in the Confirmation.

New Apostolic Church

In the New Apostolic Church is next to the water baptism and the Lord's Supper the " Holy Sealing " donated as a third sacrament. According to this understanding flows under the rite of laying on of hands by an ordained Apostle of the Holy Spirit in the believer above and therefore gives it the status of a child of God.

The Consolamentum at the Cathars

For the Cathars, who rejected water baptism, passed the entrance ceremony in the circle of Perfecti in Consolamentum, which was 1.12 EU and 2.2 EU also called Spirit baptism. The Consolamentum was the only way to salvation. He was preceded by a novitiate. The Consolamentum was completed in a ceremony at which - under the direction of the bishop or the oldest Katharers the community or the environment - all Cathars took part, who had already received the Consolamentum. The handover of the Consolamentums took place, for forgiveness of sins and the handover of the Lord's Prayer to the novices, by laying the Gospel of John on the head of the candidate. One by one those present touched the head of the novice and thus transferred the spirit of knowledge on him. Women were able to Consolamentum as well as men to receive and pass on. Committed a Perfectus a sin not only be Consolamentum was invalid, but also those spirit baptisms, which were donated by the sinner.
