Agualva -Cacém belongs to the district of Sintra, which in turn is part of the district of Lisbon in the Lisbon area. Agualva -Cacém consists of the Freguesias Agualva, Cacém, Mira- Sintra, and São Marcos. The municipal area is 127 km ².

Agualva -Cacém had until 2001 even the status of a Freguesia, but received on 12 July 2001 the municipal law. The Freguesia was dissolved in the same month.
