Agustín Díaz de Mera García Consuegra

Agustín Díaz de Mera García Consuegra ( born September 27, 1947 in Daimiel, Ciudad Real) is a Spanish politician ( PP) and since 2004 a member of the European Parliament. Díaz de Mera was chief of the Spanish police during the Madrid cable stops on 11 March 2004.

Political career

Díaz de Mera from 1989 to 1993 and from 1996 to 2002 Member of the Spanish Senate and from 1993 to 1996 Member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies. 1999 to 2002 he was also mayor of Ávila.

From July 2002 to March 2004 he was Director General of the Spanish National Police and headed in this function, the first investigations after the Madrid cable stops on 11 March 2004, where he allegations of the PP -led government led by José María Aznar on an offense by the Basque terrorist organization ETA did not object, even though the investigation results pointed early on the Islamist organization Al- Qaeda. After a few days was chosen after the attacks in the Spanish parliamentary elections, the PP from the government, Díaz de Mera lost his job.

In the European elections in July 2004, he was instead chosen for the PP to the European Parliament. He belongs to the Group of the European People's Party (EPP until 2009 EPP- ED) and is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

In the course of the trial before the highest Spanish Criminal Court against the alleged perpetrators of the attacks of 11 March 2004, there were in early 2007 to a scandal when the witness asked Díaz de Mera stating to him known policeman had seen a document that links between ETA and Al Qaeda qualifications; this document was, however, later destroyed to cover up the links between ETA and the attacks in the interest of the new Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero ( PSOE). When the court then asked the name of this police officer, Díaz de Mera refused to answer. Thereupon the court at the European Parliament requested the waiver of immunity Díaz de Mera, sentenced him to a fine of 1000 euros and opened another case against him for non-compliance of the orders of the Court. Then called Díaz de Mera, the names of two police officers, in turn, but denied the existence of such a document. On 7 November 2007 the case against Díaz de Mera was eventually discontinued.
