Agustín Gaínza

Agustín " Piru " Gaínza Vicandi ( born May 28, 1922 in Basauri, Biscay; † January 6, 1995 ) was a Spanish- Basque footballer. At club level, he celebrated great success with Athletic Bilbao. With Spain, he participated in the World Cup 1950.

Gaínza was one of the most successful striker in the history of Athletic Bilbao, the club for which he was solely active. From 1940 to 1959, he played 381 times in the Primera División, scoring 120 goals. For a long time he was the captain and star of the team. Overall, he stood with Bilbao nine times in the Spanish Cup final, then called Copa del Generalissimo, he could ultimately win seven times (1943, 1944, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1956 and 1958). In the years 1943 and 1956 he also won the Spanish championship.

For the Spanish national football team, he completed 1945-1955 33 games and hit 10 times. With the Football World Cup 1950 in Brazil, he led the team as captain on the 4th Place.

After his playing career, he was from 1965 to 1969 coach of Athletic Bilbao.
