Ahuriri River

The Ahuriri River is a river in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. Especially in the lower reaches, he is a braided river. The upper course is located on the eastern flank of the Southern Alps. The river flows 70 km through the southern part of the Mackenzie basin before reaching the Lake Benmore, one of the reservoirs of the hydroelectric project on the Waitaki. He unites here with the Waitaki, which eventually empties into the Pacific Ocean.

Shortly before its confluence with the lake crossing the State Highway 8 the river, the State Highway 83 approximately follows the middle and lower reaches of the Ahuriri. The place Omarama is located about 6 km west of the mouth. It is the only place on the river.
