Omarama

Omarama ( Māori: City of Light) is a village in the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand. Known is the place above all for its soaring land on which took place in 1995, the World Cup and the numerous world records served as a starting point.

Geography

Omarama is located in the south of the Mackenzie Basin. To the north and west extend the Southern Alps, the closest mountain is 13 kilometers away, Benmore Peak. Just north of the settlement proceeds of the Ahuriri River, which flows six kilometers east into the reservoir Lake Benmore.

The nearby towns is Twizel, approximately 30 km north; the nearest town is Wanaka, about 70 km south-west.

Politically Omarama is part of the Waitaki District, Canterbury.

Omarama has a primary school with 34 students and a decile rating of 6 in 2009

Demography

At the last census in 2006 lived in Omarama 231 people, including 126 men and 105 women. 78 % of the population have European ancestors, 8% indigenous.

Economy

Omarama is located at the intersection of State Highway 8 and State Highway 83, the area is characterized traditionally agricultural, more recently, especially tourism plays a major role.
